INTRODUCTION

This totally unique module is a development of the popular Synergy 1 (formerly called TU3)  common rail tuning module and further optimises performance by combining my digital tuning technology plus a digital version of the successful Mafam MF75p maf compensator in one compact housing, making it the only future proof tuning product for your diesel Rover 75, MG  ZT or Freelander TD4 as well as many BMW's with 5pin maf sensor. BMW page

The tuning section is programmed with the five most commonly used settings, giving you a choice of throttle response (something analogue tuning boxes have no control over) with up to 33bhp more power on the 116ps engine and around 25bhp on the 131ps engine.

In addition, by using a more advanced microcontroller,  the digital Mafam section connects to your maf sensor and remaps the maf signal in real time to cancel out drift and deterioration. With 2 settings, one for use with the Bosch maf and one for the Pierburgh or very poor Bosch one, you can extend the life of the expensive Bosch one and then fit the much cheaper Pierburgh one (actually an OEM Mercedes part).

Even if your maf sensor is okay, after as little as 30k miles, it can suffer signal degradation. This has a large impact on the performance below 2500rpm. You can read more about this on my 75maf page here. The phenomenon affects many makes of diesels and the only cure was until now, an expensive new Bosch maf sensor.

The result is superb low down torque and throttle response from just over 1000rpm, smooth build up of torque with the turbo coming in from 1500rpm, excellent midrange thrust for easier, safer overtaking and a readiness to rev beyond 4000rpm .

OTHER FEATURES

Separate switches are fitted to bypass each section so if your maf sensor is okay for the moment, you can leave the mafam section switched out and simply use the module as a Synergy 1 tuning box. In fact you needn't connect the mafam section at all until you need to, though its worth trying!

The SYNERGY 2 TUNING MODULE  is the complete solution for performance enhancement of your  Rover 75, MG ZT, Freelander TD4 & BMW diesel at under half the price of most basic tuning boxes.

* available from my online shop for £71.75 [A Bosch one costs over £220 or £250+ if dealer fitted. If its less, it won't be a genuine Bosch one]

Hi Ron
Now that I have had the Synergy for a few weeks, I thought I would let you know how I am getting on.
I am using position 2 with the maf section switched off and the system works very well, unfortunately I have had a couple of weeks where my journey has been broken by bad roadwork's etc so I cannot be sure of the like for like fuel consumption, but on the whole it seem broadly similar to standard.
Performance is very good with improvement across the rev range and delivery that feels very factory, an impressive achievement.Tick over is JUST a little more uneven.
If I could make one very minor change it would be that for AUTO's the first 4 or 5% of the throttle sensitivity be softened just a little to stop the box hunting for gears when you say, get to a roundabout think you need to stop , come off the gas but then see a gap so you apply a small amount just as the box thinks about changing down. Having said that its not much of an issue, you just need to be a bit more sensitive with the boot.
All In all, defiantly the best and most accomplished way to improve performance that I have ever used, sure beats stripping the top of a small block for cams manifolds and then trying to  get the jetting and timing curves right.
If you want any recommendations pls ask

Hi Ron, just fitted synergy to my 116hp Rover 75 Tourer, in a word stunning, I can't believe the difference. I have got the box set on no5 at the moment and the pull from low revs is amazing, it had nothing below 2000rpm before. It is without shadow of  a doubt the best £195:00 I have ever spent on a car. I have just bought the Rover to replace my Volvo V70 and was so disappointed with the performance I thought of reselling it. Now it's brilliant, many thanks,   Simon

Hi, Ron! Just thought I'd give you an update...
I have the tuning box turned on as well as the MAF compensator, and I'm just flitting between '1' and '2', to see what best suits. '5' leaves me with a little black smoke when I floor it (especially when cold), '1' and '2' don't, and the diving feel is similar.

What a transformation!

The throttle ACTUALLY responds like throttles should do! She hits turbo revs VERY quickly, and then she simply flies!

The 'pull' in 3rd gear (auto box) at even a moderate throttle position is truly staggering - it's actually a bit of a challenge to keep her below 30 and 40 from a standing start!

Coming off a bend and putting my foot down now leaves everything receeding in my mirrors (VERY satisfying!), and a quick squirt when jigging between lanes in traffic provides terrific response, and makes life much easier.

Putting the accelerator down while turning left or right into side roads, she actually drives round the bend properly, where previously I was well round the turn before the engine picked up.

And as for negotiating roundabouts...well! It's just like being back in my old VW Golf - see a gap, go for it, make it comfortably.
No more of this heart-stopping 'see a gap, go for it, nothing happens, scream, swear, hit the brakes!'.  It's a completely transfomed driving experience, and it has made me SO happy with my Solihull product!

I still haven't put the box into 'sport' mode yet, but I can only imagine driving from here to Manchester via the A-roads will leave me with a silly grin on my face for 80 miles...Can't wait!

Freelander TD4 (2004)

It’s been a week now that I have had the Synergy 2 fitted, the performance difference is remarkable, I found on setting 10 the performance was outstanding and didn’t see any black smoke.

I have set it back to setting 2 and found the MPG is about 43 MPG this also included some showing off to friends, the overall performance is better, smoother pulling away and top gear throttle response is great.

I have found I don’t need the Mafam turned on yet since I see no benefit. I will try it in the months to come since the MAF sensor will go off.  Thanks again for the free fitting and service.

A top quality product.

Thanks to all for permission to include your feedback. RON

DESIGN AIMS & RECOMMENDATIONS.

The Synergy 2 connects to both the Maf sensor and fuel pressure sensor in the same way as the Synergy 1 and MF75p but all signal processing is done in the digital domain. Thus it replaces the separate Synergy 1 and Mafam modules though these are still available separately or as a package for owners who want to keep the two functions separate.

Theses charts from 2005 show the BHP and Torque of my 75CDT in standard form (yellow line) and with Synergy module fitted.

The Synergy 2 is shown with just the mafam section (Dark blue line) and with the Tu3 section switched on as well. (Setting 6) Purple line.

You can clearly see the effect of the mafam section on low down torque - the turbo comes in from 1600rpm and the torque is boosted significantly between 1600 and 2250rpm. The effects of the intake mod and Pierburgh maf are probably responsible for the higher revving ability.

THE CONTROLS

The separate switches mean that either section can be bypassed. The rotary control has 10 positions but its easy to find the right one - see table below.

First  you determine the best mafam setting with the tuning section switched out.

The majority of engines with over 40k miles will show some maf sensor deterioration and this will be affecting the performance and driveability below 2000rpm. Sometimes the loss is quite small and you may not even be aware of it.

You should be able to pull away using no more than 1000rpm and accelerate smoothly and linearly without any hesitation or delay before the car pickups. If not - your maf sensor is responsible. Trying to get any sense out of a dealer is often fruitless because maf degradation never shows up on diagnostic tests and any query about lack lustre low down performance is usually met with a "they're all like that sir" reply...!

"It never ceases to disappoint me that many dealers seem (or pretend?) to be blissfully unaware of this well known maf issue"

Only when you have driven a Rover, MG or Freelander diesel with the optimum maf signal, will you realise what you have been missing.  Many owners come very close to selling their car due to frustratingly poor performance below 2000rpm, only to rapidly change their minds once a Synergy 2 has been fitted.

Please visit my 75 Maf page here to find out how to decide whether your maf is faulty.

If you find that no improvement is felt using the mafam section, it can be left switched off or even disconnected until required.

MPG UPDATE. 27-08-06

I have now had a Synergy 2 + Pierburgh maf, installed for 6months and my intake mod done for about 2 months. On my daily 12mile round trips to the Post Office  (max speed 60, numerous 30mph bends and a steep hill) I average 44-45 mpg based on fuel actually used. I drive 'briskly' and make no attempt at saving fuel, but only use max power for overtaking.

On longer runs sticking to the speed limit + 10% (or so!) and making 'good progress' with plenty of overtaking, I get around 49-50mpg.

Generally speaking, I avoid large throttle openings below 1500rpm, don't change down until the tacho reads 1100rpm on the level and 1250rpm on hills, the aircon is not often used, or only for short periods. (we are talking Perthshire UK, not Perth Australia!)

I always add Millers Diesel Plus to the fuel.

Many  Synergy 2 owners have reported improved mpg.

FUEL ECONOMY COMMENTS

Neither the Synergy 1 nor 2 will adversely affect the fuel consumption and in most cases will improve it depending upon how you drive. Equally, if your mpg is below average, neither will effect a total cure because there are 4 vital components that also affect it.

1) Maf sensor   2) EGR valve  3) PCV valve 4) Leaking intercooler seals.

If you feel your car is using more fuel that it should, please try and find out if this is actually the case* and what the cause is. I don't advise fitting any tuning product purely to improve the mpg and would never make such claims even though many owners have reported improved mpg.

*The Tourer and automatic models use significantly more than the saloon. The aircon can also make a substantial difference, especially in hot weather. Also check the tyre pressures and for uneven tyre wear that indicates the tracking needs checking. A few new owners possibly expect better mpg than is achievable, particularly if using their car for frequent short journeys or much urban driving. Its a heavy , solidly built car! Mpg will drop by a few mpg in cold weather.

ITS EASY TO FIT. "If the cat hand hands and could talk it could more than just fit it..."

Simply remove the engine cover and air filter cover at the back of the engine - see 3rd photo below.

The tuning section connects between the fuel rail sensor and its plug, shown opposite disconnected.

Whereas the maf compensator connectors to the maf sensor shown below and accessible once the air filter cover has been removed. A long reach 5mm Allen key is supplied with the Synergy 2 so all you need is an 8mm spanner to take off the engine cover.

Once the cover is off you can modify it to avoid having to remove it in future, as shown below.

Finally install the module in the battery box using the supplied velcro where its out of sight and well protected. (Leave the box lid off until you have found the best setting.)
