* May need new cable - £25 max charge inc postage

This is what Car Mechanics Magazine had to say in their follow report which was published in the February 2007 issue.  They used the module for 6months before reaching their conclusion:

" Recommended!  So our verdict is clear and unambiguous; this product really does do EXACTLY what it is claimed to, and we therefore have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it to anyone with a Rover 75 diesel. It’s also extremely good value – especially bearing in mind that the standard Rover Powerplus upgrade costs around £450….   Reprinted with kind permission of the editor. [Car mechanics have several back issues available for Rover/MG & Freelander owners]"

UPDATE ON EURO 5 VEHICLES

We receive many comments about recent diesels being sluggish and in some cases hesitant at low rpm (below 2000) compared to earlier models. Eg the new Mondeo & Freelander TD4, and many are also thirstier. A Synergy will restore the performance & fuel consumption to what you'd expect from a modern diesel at minimal cost. Even main dealers are showing an interest in our products in response to customer dissatisfaction. The manufacturers are hamstrung by the current emissions legislation such that many are either turning a blind eye or are unofficially endorsing dealer fitted 'upgrades'. Some even offer their own - at a price.

SYNERGY 1 AND WINTER WEATHER:

Some drivers hesitate to tune their engines believing this would make their chances of wheel spin greater. With a Synergy 1 fitted, this is most likely NOT the case because the improved low down torque and throttle response means i) you can stay in a higher gear for longer and ii) the throttle response is more progressive. So whereas, (especially with off the shelf 2008/9 models), the torque is weak below about 15-1800rpm and then comes in strongly breaking the driven wheels grip, with a Synergy fitted, the torque is greater at low rpm and also more progressive and controllable.

You can also easily adjust the setting by simply tuning the knob - unlike other brands of tuning box where you need a laptop or a screwdriver to fiddle about getting inside to make adjustments. You can even just switch it off to see whether its better off or on.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Synergy 1 is a fully digital tuning module for most popular common rail diesel engines. It comes with 9 maps (settings) pre-installed to suit all driving styles and requirements. The maps are vehicle specific so the Synergy is NOT a generic 'one size fits all' product. This important for optimum functioning, performance & economy

Changing setting is very easy - just turn the knob before starting the engine. No laptop, dealer programming, or tools needed. In addition, rather than just acting like a 'volume control', the settings enable you to control the torque at low/medium and medium/high rpm separately. In practice this means you can choose to have the extra performance only when you put your foot well down or at the opposite extreme, have a very responsive throttle action with more performance throughout the rev range, mild to wild if you like! This unique feature also makes the Synergy 1 compatible with automatic gearboxes.

The label on module, shown opposite shows how the different settings work. >>

The optional dash mounted switch offers 3 settings, low, medium and high, with the high setting being the current program as selected on the Synergy 1's control knob. (not available for all makes & models of vehicle)

The Synergy 1 will provide performance gains in excess of many more expensive tuning products including many remaps without jeopardising reliability. With over 3000 owners in two years, its reliability & popularity is also proven. However if you aren't satisfied for any reason, return it in as new condition within 30days for a full refund.

Why is the Synergy is much cheaper than other tuning modules? The answer is simple. we pass on the savings made by selling direct to motorists. With no dealer margin to inflate the price, you save £100+, and with low overheads, minimal advertising, and all design development & testing  done in-house (so no royalties or programmers to pay) you save another £100+.

To sum up:-

The Synergy offers you £450 tuning box performance, quality and support for a third of the price or your money back.

Synergy development in brief.

The Synergy modules are 100% British products, designed and developed in house without reference to existing products on the market. We started with a clean slate and designed out the deficiencies experienced by the customers of these other tuning boxes.

So this means:

  1. High quality alloy housing - not a cheap plastic box

  2. No tools or laptop needed to adjust it and we fit and on/off switch so you can switch it off without having to remove it,

  3. Hard wired cable  - unlike other companies, we do NOT use computer connectors which are not suitable for underbonnet use.

  4. The wide range & ease of adjustment means you don't need to specify power or economy version when ordering - just turn the knob.

  5. Very low power consumption means no battery connections are needed

The Synergy monitors & adjusts the fuel pressure upto 20,000 times per second and reacts to driver request for more fuel equally rapidly. The fuelling maps embedded in the sophisticated firmware operate in a non-linear manner to assure the engine is not overfuelled at any point in the rev range. [This contrasts with most other tuning products that are little more than digital versions of outmoded analogue boxes which have a linear response. This manifests itself as a tendency to over fuel at low rpm or when set for maximum 'top end' power, or conversely, when turned down to avoid the engine cutting out, it then underfuels at low to mid rpm so you lose the benefit.].

The Synergy also facilitates the engine ecu's adjustment of injection timing and in some cases, turbo boost pressure in ways that benefit the throttle response and economy. However because the ecu is always in control, the manufacturers maximum settings are not over ridden.

Extensive testing on our own vehicles and those of volunteer testers, has proved the design which has remained essentially unchanged since its inception although recently revised to use an even faster & lower power processor.

The module incorporates a state of the art low power single chip 20Mhz microcontroller (mcu),  high quality sealed switches and a scratch resistant anodised   aluminium housing. The mcu is programmed in circuit and can be reprogrammed with updates or when necessary due to change of vehicle.

The Synergy consumes a minute  0.004amps - approximately 10 times less than some other modules and so has no impact on the ecu's power supply circuitry and avoids the need for battery connections.

The cable is hardwired to the circuit board unlike competing products that use computer 'D' connectors. Such connectors are NOT designed for harsh underbonnet conditions. Should you wish to transfer the module to another vehicle we can easily and quickly replace the cable if need be and reprogram the unit. (Overall cost inc postage  - circa £25, no charge for just reprgramming but £5.75 for return p&p)

All models now come with original equipment style connectors as used by vehicle manufacturers.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK  A selection from many received via email, printed with the permission of the sender

HYUNDAI TERRACAN 2.9CRD

"Just to let you know that the Synergy 1 Tuning Box that I purchased for my Hyundai Terracan 2.9 Diesel Automatic is fantastic it "does exactly what it says on the tin" the extra power and torque has transformed the performance and given me a few more miles to the gallon as well. I never thought that a plug in box could have made so much difference, but it certainly does...  Nice one Ron!!"

TOYOTA AVENSIS 2.2D4D 150BHP

"Thanks for your assistance last week.  Been down to Cheshire this week so managed to clock up over 500 miles since the Synergy was fitted and I am delighted.  I am running the box on medium / medium.  The car is much more responsive at low revs and accelerates much more quickly without having use loads of revs.  Fuel consumption has improved by about 5 mpg.  I did an almost identical trip about six weeks ago and got 46mpg.  This time 52.  Impressive." Thanks Mike.

ALSO HAD EXCELLENT FEEDBACK ON SEVERAL LANDCRUISERS (3L) WITH 6PIN PLUG.     Ron

MONDEO 2.0TDCI

"I bought one of your synergy 1 units from E-bay last week and just wanted to drop you a quick line to say how impressed I am.
I fitted the unit (Mondeo 2.0tdci) earlier today, which took all of 5 minutes, and have to say that the difference is nothing short of amazing! At present I only have the box set to 6 but the car drives so much better than standard. The biggest difference is at lower revs where the pick up is much smoother, which makes the car far easier to drive round town, as the "on boost" "off boost" change is almost not there at all! I'll definitely recommend you to other diesel drivers". Alex H

Citroen C3 1.4HDI

Hi  Ron, just to let you know I fitted my tuning box, with very little effort and the effect it has had is startling. The throttle response is crisp,
it will pull strongly from 30mph in 5th gear which is nothing short of amazing for a little 1.4 diesel!  Overall the performance is now similar to
a good 1800cc petrol car. I have yet to see what effect it has had on economy, but the drivability it has now would be well worth a few mpg
sacrificed. (This engine is also used by Ford in the Fiesta & Focus & by Peugeot.)

Citroen C5

"Anyhoo, its fitted, turned to 8 and even on a short run it has transformed the bottom end; now it starts to pull around 1300 rpm instead of 1800-1900 rpm and pulls much harder than before ,much harder than a 90bhp C5 ever did in the past !
Thanks for a great bit of kit, which although inexpensive compared to comparable units, is  well finished, good looking and very effective. Added to that, the 2 year warranty for peace of mind and a personal service that much larger organisations must envy, this seems to one of the best bargains on offer.  Feel free to quote me on your web site etc." (Thanks for that Ken, Ron)

FIAT SCUDO (Peugeot/Citroen 2L hdi)

Thought I’d offer some feedback on the module fitted to my fiat scudo van (HDI 110).After a bit of experimentation with settings I decided to get the full benefit and run it on number 10,The increase in power and torque is superb. As you can tell I am extremely impressed with the performance and price of your product and have made recommendations to other HDI engined owners.

SYNERGY1 On a KIA CEED SW 1.6 CDRi 115 bhp

OK trialed this thing for a month or more now and have to report… It works as you say!!! Getting smoother acceleration and approx 8 % better MPG, measured with brim to brim filling. Setting is at 6 and getting best MPG results at this setting too. The KIA 1.6 engine is a gutsy little devil anyway but they seem to be starving it at the low end to achieve emission figures. Before fitting, when the turbo kicked in it surged due to the differences in torque. Now it has a much smoother transition J   Steve, Norfolk

PICASSO

Just a short note to update my experience of your unit on my Picasso. After a few months, what I have noted is that, with the control set mid-way, fuel consumption is pretty much as with the standard system under most circumstance. The only time it suffers seems to be when the wife is driving it, and we have very different driving profiles. She tends to use the car for very short trips (1-2 miles, maximum 15) compared to mine (7-50 miles). Performance gain is mainly noticeable when pulling up hills, which now requires less use of the box, and in fast-moving motorway/A-road traffic, where it is easier to regain speed after being baulked by traffic (always a bit of a pain with the standard setup). I just wish I had waited a while before buying our other car - Peugeot 306TD. If I'd delayed a bit, I might have got hold of an HDi, and I'd guess that one of those with your box on it would be a very satisfying combination. Best Regards, Tony

Rover 75 /  MG ZT

"I felt is necessary to send you this e-mail I have today fitted the kit to my Rover 75 diesel.  I cannot believe the difference in its response.  I have over the years been involved with the tuning of cars (mainly petrol) but this product is the most impressive piece of kit I have ever used.  It was a delight to fit with clear and concise instructions.  "

"Its like taking delivery of a new car! This time with POWER!. I put it onto setting 5, went down to the local dual carriageway and even before I got there you could feel the extra power surge....it's now the car it always should have been."

RENAULT MEGANE 2L DCI 150 (we've also done some Megane Sport 175s)

Hello Ron, as I told you before I had been running the unit on setting 6 since it was fitted, the engine gave the impression of a much shorter throttle cable. It pulled away smoother and cleaner without the hesitation of the standard unit, with a strong build up as the revs increased.
Setting 9, the throttle becomes almost instant even in the higher gears. You can pull 6th gear from just above tickover it is that flexible. What is amazing is the way it covers the ground, no loud exhaust noises it just feels like a big hand is suddenly pushing you forward, even in 6th gear. It makes you very lazy on the motorway, you never need the gearbox. It does have drawbacks, the traction control flashes a lot with spirited driving. I have set it back to setting 6 for winter as the softer take up will be more predictable in the bad weather but in spring it will be back to setting 9 for motoring with a big smile. This is how a good 2 ltr diesel car should be smooth, punchy and economical (always over 50 mpg on a run at motorway speeds). I am so pleased I took the "risk" of fitting a unit I had so little information about, it does exactly what you advertise and so much fun to drive.

Jaguar X-Type 2.0D

"I decided to try your Tu3 on my 2006 X-type 2.0D and boy, am I glad I did. You've given it the performance a Jaguar deserves diesel or not and the much improved torque and driveability makes up for the lack of an auto gearbox. Nice one Ron!"

Jaguar XF 3L diesel

Hi Ron, Having covered over 1000miles in my XF with your Synergy box fitted I thought I'd provide some feedback.
Needless to say, and as with my old R75 CDTi, the  performance of the car with the box fitted has exceeded all expectations. Its as if the standard car was a conciously 'detuned' version of what it should be. I started with the box on setting 1 just to check it worked, etc... and have now settled on setting 6 (med throttle sensitivity, high power) which seems to suit the car perfectly.  Although the engine has been bedding in as well, the autobox no longer seems to get bogged down at low speed/rpm (it appeared to be slighly hesitant to shift down a gear at 20-30mph at 1050rpm). It now doesn't need to and simply pulls away as it should.
The engine smoothness remains unaffected and revs freely to the red line - it reminds me of my old petrol 2.5l V6 Mondeo - but with more power!.
I haven't noticed any adverse effect on mpg, other than the fact I'm probably using more 'power' than before. On a long 250mile run up the M5/M6 I actually managed to average 47mpg!
Strangely enough, the mpg values recorded on the trip computer appear to be very accurate to within 0.5% on setting 6 which is a bonus. I haven't measured the accuracy at other settings but will in due course.
In summary I am pretty confident that the car's performance is now very close to the official 'S' version of the XF, for which Jaguar want £3k more for over the standard version.
Many thanks again for your help and brilliant service - I have no hesitation in recomending you and your products to others.

Vauxhall Astra 150

I’ve had the Synergy 1 installed for a week now and I thought it was time to let you know how pleased I am.  My Astra Sport Hatch CDTi 150 was always lively but had a fairly narrow power band and required a lot of gear changes.  After reading the user comments I thought the Synergy 1 might be the answer, well I seriously underestimated how much difference it would make. The improvement in low down power is amazing, as is the improved throttle response - the flexibility and the smooth torque delivery make the car so much nicer to drive. Previously I only ever used sixth gear on motorways and dual carriageways – now it’s a useable main road gear. This is how the car should have been in the fist place. I’m using the Synergy on setting 6 – it does exactly what I wanted it to and there would appear to be a noticeable improvement in fuel economy as well.. All in all Ron, I’m delighted – it works even better than I expected and is great value.

ASTRA VAN SPORTIVE 150BHP

A little late, but never the less a little note for the website on my happiness with the unit. This is the third vehicle that I have had one of your boxes on and all have been excellent over a combined 100,000 miles. On the Astra it has taken the in gear times down from 6 seconds 50 to 70 in 5th gear to an amazing 4.5 secs and is only just beginning to pull really hard when I back off at 70mph. It will now spin the front wheels using just half the throttle at 2500 revs in the first 3 gears in the damp and the first two in the dry! It has 4k miles on it now and loosening up all the time. Fuel economy is 45mpg combined, which should rise if I can stop myself using the power!!VOLVO XC90 2.4D

Ron fitted the Synergy module on friday 18 12 09 to my volvo XC90 2.4 common rail diesel . I had allready had a £400 re map by RICA engineering . I wasnt to pleased with that even after having a £450 turbo intercooler  I will admit i did get a noticeable increase in power after about 2500 rpm but i apeared to lose out on about 3 mpg on city journeys ie short runs . since fitting your module i cant believe the difference in power throuought the rev range & to my supprise my short journey mpg has gone from 27 mpg to 32.5 never lower no matter how i boot it . I am running the module on no 9 & have no starting-idleing or smoke type problems.
The Synergy is doing what you probably expected the remap to do. Its very common for remaps to have limited effect at low rpm. So no wonder the combination of remap + Synergy works even better. Ron

Our sister companies Vauxhall Vectra 1.9cdti.

Our 177k mile '54 reg Vectra sri 150bhp CDTi is phenomenal, not only in the massive torque but in the way it just keeps on pulling way past 4500rpm. Other diesels like the BMW engined Rover75/MG ZT & Mondeo /Jaguar's X-Type tend to tail off over 3500rpm but not this Fiat engine. It has been dyno'd at 180bhp but that was in the early days.... Recently I did measure a 30-50mph in 4th gear time of 4.1 secs! More figures to come.

STOP PRESS

We've recently had fantastic results on a Vauxhall 1.9cdti 150. (2007 / '57 Astra), with an estimated 200bhp. Blows away Skoda Fabia VRS 170s! A Vectra was measured on the dyno at 198bhp, beating others with another make of tuning box fitted.

A Signum 1.9cdti 150 does 8mpg per gallon more with a Synergy 1.

A Renault van driver reported upto 100miles more per tank of fuel since fitting a Synergy 1, as well as much improved performance.

Freelander TD4 2.2L & Mondeo 2L 140bhp owners are telling us how pleased they are with the improved driveability and towing ability.

SYNERGY 2  The Synergy 2 is a combined SYNERGY 1 tuning module and digital maf compensator. Its the only one-box solution for performance enhancement on the market that we know of, and currently is only available for the Rover 75/ZT/Freelander TD4 & BMW 2L diesels. Recommended if your mileage is over 50k unless your maf has been replaced.

POWER MAD?     THE SYNERGY 2B.    Another unique Tuning-diesels product

For even more torque, we also manufacturer the Synergy 2B which alters the boost pressure as well as the fuelling to give fantastic throttle response, even more torque and vastly reduced turbo lag.

Currently available (May 2010) for the 1.9L 150bhp Fiat/Alfa/Saab/Vauxhall engine and Toyota 2 and 2.2L engines.

This dual function module is 100% plug-in and so fits in seconds. There are 10 settings, in 2 groups of 5. Group A has low boost increase, group B provides a higher boost increase. The maximum boost pressure is not increased by a detrimental amount but part throttle boost is increased by upto 5psi and this contributes to turbo lag reduction since the turbo is spinning more quickly, and the economy is often further improved.

Overall, a very worthwhile improvement for just £40 more than a Synergy 1

THE SYNERGY 2B COSTS JUST £199 inc 17.5% vat.

Dash switch option - add £20. (Must be specified when ordering as cannot be retrofitted)

Feedback from an Avensis 150b hp owner..

Thought I'd give you an update on the 2.2 Avensis.
Well the car has been fantastic since the synergy 2 with boost control was fitted. The performance is really quite something with input at the throttle equaling output of the engine.
Only really experienced this on my Suzuki 1250 Bandit before. The drive is now instant from idle and keeping the needle between 2000rpm and 3200rpm the car really does shift moving it up a level to compete with higher capacity diesels.
Fuel economy is incredible for a big heavy car,
recently I had to drive from Glasgow to london because of the volcanic cloud issue and cruising at 80mph the car returned 69mpg according to the trip computer and on the return journey 70mpg even taking off 10% because of the tuning box influence it was still some achiement.

Our sister company, Energy Tuning Ltd, owned a 180k mile Vectra and this flies with  a Synergy 2b fitted. " I can't believe how well this Fiat 1.9L engine performs - it revs so willingly to way over 4k rpm, is relatively smooth and quiet and never feels stressed even with its massive mileage. I was reluctant to hand it back" Ron
