I started Tuning-Diesels in 2005 so deciding to retire after an enjoyable & fulfilling 20years was not easy. However, being well past retirement age and with health issues, the time has come.

PLEASE NOTE. I personally will still be providing tech support and warranty repairs for some years.

I knew when I started Tuning-diesels that engine tuning had a limited future and the VW emissionsgate scandal hastened the end of tuning as all  motor manufacturers were under pressure to take measures to prevent owners from changing the emissions by tuning and othe engine mods.

I expect the company to close it's online store and ebay shop on the 14th of  March, though I personally  - out of my own pocket, will  maintain the website for another few months or more as well as being reachable via tuningdiesels21@gmail.com. All instruction pdfs will be added to the FAQs page in due course.

In the meantime I am willing to consider offers for the IP - domain names, and trademarks, possibly the designs & pcb Gerber files.
(I personally will be retaining ownership of any IP not sold so they will not not be free for anyone to use.)

I would also like to make it clear that the company is not going bust, it is not and won't be insolvent and will be dissoved at a time of my choosing. No liquidators have or will be called in and all creditors will be fully repaid.

Freelander TD4 common problems.

The Freelander 1 TD4 suffers from a couple of issues that do not affect the same engine in the Rover 75 & MG ZT.
Namely. vnt turbo mechanism sticking and water ingress into the wiring and fuel rail pressure sensor covered in LR tech  bulletin LRTD0052.

In the photo above you can see the classic telltale of water ingress - discolouration of the seal and it often shows on the plug body  too. Since the moisture has percolated down the complete wiring to the sensor, the plug will also have been damaged so you should replace this as well as the sensor.

QUICK SETTING GUIDE.


NO HOT START PROBLEMS:


  1. Use settings 0, 1 , or 2. Higher ones activate sooner – ie at lower boost.

  2. Turn the ‘FUEL’ screw to the right – to increase the performance. Default is with the slot approx vertical.

  3. On higher fuel settings when the box switches on you may feel it more.

  4. For best mpg the box needs to be working most of the time.

  5. It switches off on the over run and at idle so this should not be affected unless your map sensor is faulty, or the tube to it is badly clogged.

  6. Use a dash switch to give extra torque for setting off with a trailer attached and on hills. The amount is now adjustable using the left hand screw on the V3 version from March 10 2020.


NO HOT START PROBLEM BUT SLUGGISH SETTING OFF


  1. Use settings 3, 4 ,or 5 . Higher ones activate sooner – ie at lower boost.

  2. Adjust the ‘HSF’ control for improved setting off and less turbo lag. Do not turn higher than needed as this may affect the mpg and idle stability, especially on a cold start.

  3. ALTERNATIVELY, if a push button is fitted, simply push it in and release when up to cruising speed. The amount is now adjustable using the left hand screw.



HOT START PROBLEMS .


TIP. Hot start not improved. If the injection timing is out, this is known to cause hot start problems which the Synergy cannot improve. So if the problem arises after a recent pump or cambelt (where relevant) change have the timing checked.


  1. MILD: use settings 3, 4, or 5 which give some extra fuel all the time and adjust the HSF screw to give just enough extra fuel to improve starting.

    Too much fuel will affect the idle stability – turn to the left to reduce.


  1. SEVERE: use settings 6 or 7 which only give extra fuel for 20secs after turning on the ignition and adjust the HSF screw to give just enough extra fuel to improve starting.

  2. TIP: You can stop any idle roughness during the 20secs by slightly opening the throttle AFTER the engine has started.


ALTERNATIVELY, PUSH IN THE DASH SWITCH. The amount is now adjustable using the left hand screw.



DIGIBOOSTER S PRELIMINARY CHECKS

INITIAL CHECKS

A) DISCONNECT THE VACUUM SUPPLY AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE BOOST WILL BE POOR BUT MAY INCREASE AT HIGH RPM. IF IT GETS TOO HIGH THEN YOU NEED TO LENGTHEN THE ACTUATOR BECAUSE THE DGBS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LOWER IT. see note below.


B) CONNECT THE DGBS, LEAVE ON SETTING 0. START THE ENGINE AND OBSERVE THE ACTUATOR ROD. YOU SHOULD AIM FOR IT TO PULL IN ABOUT 2CM AT THIS STAGE.


  1. If not, change switches 5,6,7,8 to a higher setting, eg switch 7 on, rest off.

  2. Next, drive the vehicle and observe the boost on your gauge. If max boost is not high enough, slightly turn the top adjuster to the right.

  3. If you want more low down boost, use a higher setting of switches 5,6,7,8 and then alter the top adjuster to control the maximum boost which is usually between 1800-2200rpm on most diesels.

  4. IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR THE ACTUATOR ROD TO PULL IN FULLY OR AGAINST THE VNT LEVER END STOP. THIS WILL LEAD TO TURBO LAG AND FLAT SPOTS.


ACTUATOR ROD LENGTH SETTING

If fitting a turbo off another engine, the actuator rod will have been factory set for that engine. This means you may have to adjust the linkage either way.

So if you find the boost is too high on all the switch settings, you can try adjusting the nut to lengthen the rod. The converse also applies if the max boost is low even on max setting, however the adjustment should be small and assumes there is still some free movement of the vnt lever – ie its not already against the end stop.


PETROL TUNING BOX

We've just completed testing of our Synergy 5, two channel petrol engine tuning module.
Initially it is available for the Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW 1L 95 and 115bhp TSI direct injection petrol turbo engines.
It's easy to fit, like our other products, and plugs into two engine sensors to give much improved performance, less turbo lag, fewer gear changes and all with no impact on average fuel consumption.

Our tester told us it easily matched a £200 well known brand of chip on the medium setting and he expected it to be comparable to their £400 box on max.

SYNERGY + REMAP = OMG!

We are often asked if a synergy can be used with a remapped engine ecu.  Well thanks to the wide range of adjustments, it can, and will enhance the remap, especially in the low to mid rpm range. For example a 120bhp 8valve Vauxhall reached an amazing 178bhp with  both remap and Synergy 1. A Freelander TD4 gained another 20bhp compared to the remap or a Synergy 2 alone, reaching 170bhp and with no smoke.  Of course you need to be aware of the possible consequences of any tuning and particularly when such massive increases are achieved.
